Infant Dyschezia V/S Colic

Infant Dyschezia vs Colic

If you are confused between
Infant Dyschezia and Infant colic here’s the difference between these two.

Knowing the difference, you can know what could be the possible reason behind your newborn’s excessive crying.

Let’s begin with knowing about both the terms:

What is Infant Dyschezia?

Infant dyschezia is a health condition also known as Grunting Baby Syndrome. Not to get worried by the name as it is not a that serious condition.

If your baby grunts, squirm, and even cries when they are trying to poop then the baby is said to have infant dyschezia.

What is Infant Colic?

Colic is a condition when a baby cries a lot but not due to some underlying health condition.

In colic, the baby is usually healthy. If the baby eats properly, poops properly, and is growing at a healthy rate but keeps on crying for a longer time than usual then it is termed infant colic.

Diving further into the difference between Infant Dyschezia vs Colic, here is an explanation for the cause and symptoms of both infant dyschezia and infant colic.

Cause of Infant Dyschezia:

Usually, babies grunt while pooping because it takes a lot of brains and pelvic muscle coordination for a baby to poop, and babies, in the initial months of their lives, do not have control over their bodies.

And due to this, babies try to push, while pooping, with their diaphragm and stomach with their pelvic muscles still tight. As a result, they grunt, squirm and cry.

They do have normal stool though and are not in pain while passing the stool.

Cause of Infant Colic

There is no specific cause for colic as doctors are still unable to find the exact reason behind it. It could be because the baby is getting used to his/her surroundings or this could be related to something the nursing mother is eating, something in their baby formula, etc.

Symptoms of Infant Dyschezia

  • Grunting while pooping

  • Face turning red

  • Crying while pooping (make sure this is not because of some other health condition)

  • Gets normal poop after trying for 10 minutes or so

Also notice if the stool is hard with the above symptoms then it could be constipation in the baby and for that, you should consult a doctor.

Symptoms of Infant Colic

  • Excessive crying

  • Crying at a particular time, regularly

  • Usually crying in evenings or at night

  • Very hard to soothe

  • May stiffen arms and arc their back

Treatment of Infant Dyschezia and Infant Colic

Although no medical treatment is needed in both cases as these aren’t any serious medical conditions but are part of your baby’s growth.

In Dyschezia, you can try baby massaging as it is very helpful to calm the baby and relax their muscles. Just try to comfort the baby with a reassuring hand or smile.

While in Colic you may need to see your baby’s doctor as excessive crying can sometimes be a sign of some other health condition. Just make sure to get your baby examined, if everything is fine and the baby is healthy then you don’t need to worry as colic doesn’t last very long and eventually ends as the baby grows.

Hopefully, this article helps you and now you know the difference between infant dyschezia and colic.
